Newsworthy: April 2010
There's actually a ton of stuff to report this week! Thanks to everyone that contributed to Newsworthy, you guys kick ass…
First of all (and, very important to the local, Indianapolis scene), the "Support Your Local Skatepark Day" shindig at Major Taylor Velodrome is happening on Saturday, April 24th, 2010. The rain date is Sunday, April 25th. This is an informal, all-day get-together at Major Taylor to show our support for our local skatepark.
One of the biggest reasons for having this event, is to show the city of Indianapolis (the mayor, the parks department, etc) that Major Taylor does get used, and used quite heavily. Apparently, recent newspaper reports have claimed that Major Taylor "doesn't get used that much, if at all". Well, as skaters, we all know that's complete and utter bullshit; there's a whole lotta times that you can't even skate the fucking place, because it's so crowded (like, any day after school... or, any weekend day…).
So: Pack yourself a lunch (everything is on a bring-your-own basis), grab your board, and show up. The event runs all day long, from dawn to dusk. We'll be there...
And, for pete's sakes: Pick Up After Yourself on this day, please. The last thing we want, is tons of footage of the place getting trashed. Use your heads, kids, and Keep It Clean…
We get regular e-mail updates from Mike and Linda Hirsch at SoCal Skateshop. This week, they mentioned that they were chosen as Thrasher's "Shop Of The Month" for May. No small feat, that is… but, we're not surprised, because Mike and Da Crew always treat their customers right. Here's what they said:
"We are stoked that Thrasher Magazine chose us for the May Issue's Shop Of The Month.. Getting props from Thrasher means a lot to our shop as we have worked hard for 8 years to grow our business into a Skate Shop that would hype skateboarders like you…"
And hyped, we are. Good Job, Mike (and Crew).
I have a shit-ton of stuff on what's going on with Indianapolis' Skatepark(s). I'll put that into it's own piece (scroll around for a minute, you'll find it).
Bart Kelly from Old Indy Skaters flowed me some info on Danville's Skatepark Situation. According to Bart (who's usually right about such things), Danville's park will not be re-opening; it has been sold (for the grand sum of $30K); and, the buyer is the city of Brazil, IN. The "move" is imminent; they're just having scheduling issues with the mover(s) at the moment. Bummer for the kids in Danville, but stoked for the ones in Brazil, I guess. We'll keep ya posted on that, and look for some confirmation of this from either Danville or Brazil.
Krush's "Lock-In (All-Nighter)" for this month is on Friday, April 30th, between 9:30pm to 7am. If you've never been to one of these (we have), they're a blast. Great park… incredibly clean and tidy… awesome staff... lots of kids… prizes and freebies galore… dinner (pizza, last time I went)… and, one of the best indoor bowls in the Midwest. I'll see if I can find a pic of that… also: Krush Summer skate camps are happening again this year. $250 per week, running between June 14th to July 2nd. See www.krushskateshop.com for details.
Krush's awesome bowl...
... the equally-awesome shop...
... and, the rest of the park. Well worth the drive from anywhere. Photos from my '08 Tour.
Dan at DK's in Kokomo writes:
"We are doing a demo for Kokomo library June 22 at 6 pm at The Pipeline Park in Kokomo's Jackson/Morrow Park. In case of rain, it will be inside at D.K.'s. The library is making a big publicity deal out of it & it will be totally informal. I wanted to get some older guys to show up so the public could see the age range involved in skating. Anyone is welcome, but should be used to skating bowls & helmet strongly advised…
Will probably also be doing the Vans Warped Tour mini-ramp qualifier, like we have done for the last four years. This is the state qualifier for the Indianapolis contest. Ours is usually end of June or early July, about one to three weeks before Indy. Some guy from outside of Indy that was mid-30's or so, got 4th or 5th, out of 30 in our contest last year. We don't have a confirmed date on it yet…"

Any event happening here, is worth going to. The big side of Kokomo's Pipeline...
